Rocco Logic
The Rocco Logic project is a revival fork of the sigrok project. We are grateful to all the developers and maintainers that have poured their efforts into sigrok over the years.
Rocco Logic continues the legacy of sigrok aiming to create a portable, cross-platform, Open-Source signal analysis software suite that supports a wide range of devices1.
We also want to focus on maintaining the commons and on software by humans for humans. This means we have a Code of Conduct to define the rules of engagement including the prohibition of AI tool use for any project contributions.
Project goals
- Regular releases We aim to have regular binary releases. The cadence is still to be determined.
- Timely PR reviews We aim to have a streamlined contribution process with timely responses to Pull Requests. Our goal is to do optimistic merging without overly focusing on nitpicks.
- Modern contribution practices We are maintaining the project on a modern software forge lowering the barrier to contribution. Including CI systems and templates.
- Hardware manufacturer agnostic We are not a vendor fork that is focusing on their own hardware without the intent to contribute back to the main project. If sigrok ends up being resurrected we will be happy to contribute all of our work back to the originating project. We also are more than happy to merge pull requests from any logic analyzer vendor that would like their hardware to be supported by the project.
Highlights
- Cross Platform Runs on multiple desktop operating systems: Linux, Mac OS, Windows, BSD
- Broad hardware support No bias to any specific hardware vendor. We gladly accept pull requests for new logic analyzer or MDO support.
- Scriptable protocol decoding Extensable and stackable protocol decoders that can be written in Python 3. We have the biggest library of decoders even compared to commercial offerings.
- File format support Supports various input/output file formats (binary, ASCII, hex, CSV, gnuplot, VCD, WAV, ...)
- Reusable and modular libraries We maintain
libroccoandlibroccodecodeas shared libraries that can be used by various frontend GUIs and tools. - Various frontends RoccoView, rocco-cli and other frentends built upon the project libraries.
Community
If you have any questions you can get in touch with us in the #rocco-logic channel either on Discord or on IRC. The channel is bridged between the two platforms so you can choose which platform suites you better. The channel hosting is maintained and provided to the project by 1BitSquared We don't have a mailinglist or forum set up yet.
Footnotes
Unlike Sigrok our goal is to refocus the project on logic analysis, improving maintainability. This means we will not widen the support to non logic analysis specific devices like multimeters. The support for them will not be actively maintained and will potentially be removed over time.
